The child protection scheme run by the department for the welfare of children in Punjab, know what this scheme is

Punjab News: The Punjab government is taking important steps under the Juvenile Justice Act to protect the children involved in the legal dispute of the state. This was expressed by Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur.

Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur said that the Punjab government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is continuously working for the welfare of women, children, elderly and disabled persons. For this, a child protection scheme is being run by the department under Mission Vatsalya. The mission is working for the care and protection of vulnerable children facing violence, exploitation, neglect, abuse, child marriage, child labor and other forms of abuse in the society.

Giving more information in this regard, the Cabinet Minister said that in every district of the state, this scheme is being worked through District Child Protection Units and a Child Welfare Committee. The aim of the scheme is to provide assistance to any child in need of care and protection. He said that if a child is not getting help in the society and is being abused, then the information should be given to the District Child Protection Officer or the Child Welfare Committee of their district. Dr. Baljit Kaur said that 280 children are living in 7 children’s homes run by the Punjab government and 1358 children are living in 32 children’s homes run by NGOs. These homes provide complete care, shelter and protection to children. He also said that all the children of these child care homes are enrolled in schools and receiving formal education.

The minister said that medical officers conduct monthly medical check-up and mandatory vaccinations of these children. Children are taken on outings, picnics, movies and other recreational activities for their holistic development. Apart from this, sports competitions, skill development courses, computer courses, art and craft activities are provided. He said that mental health counselors have been appointed in these child care homes to treat children undergoing mental trauma.

Minister of Social Security, Women and Child Development Dr. Baljit Kaur said that the department has implemented various protection laws for the protection of children such as Juvenile Justice Care and Protection of Children Act, 2015, Child Marriage Act, Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act, 2012, Prevention of Child Labour, Children in Society. Emergency Child Helpline No: 1098 (24×7) is functional to prevent threats against and strengthen child protection system, where reports related to children can be made. Dr. Baljit Kaur emphasized the need for the officials of the department to implement the Child Acts in the true sense. He said that it is our collective responsibility to protect the rights of children under this act.

Ms. Madhvi Katarian, Director, Department of Social Security and Women and Child Development, said that the main objective of the department is to implement “Mission Vatsalya” at ground level and protect children from violence, exploitation, abuse and neglect. It is equally important to hold those who harm children accountable. He appealed to the general public that if you see a child being abused and exploited, then the matter should be reported to the District Child Protection Officer or the Child Welfare Committee.
