Tomato consumers in the country are going to get a big relief soon. The current tomato prices are likely to fall sharply in early September as tomatoes begin to arrive from Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Sanjay Gupta, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of National Commodities Management Services Limited (NCML) has said that ‘Supply pressure will increase by the end of this month. We expect prices to come down significantly and by mid-September, tomato prices will reach Rs 30 per kg.

According to the data maintained by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, the average price of tomato across the country decreased from Rs 9,671 per quintal on July 14 to Rs 9,195 per quintal on August 14. In mid-July, the retail price of this tomato had reached above Rs 250 per kg in many parts of the country. However, due to the arrival of fresh tomato crop from Maharashtra and Karnataka in the market, its price is currently running at Rs 80-120 per kg in most cities.

Increased consignment of tomatoes from Maharashtra and Karnataka
According to Priyanka Chaturvedi, secretary of the Jhannu Agricultural Produce Market Committee in Narayangarh, Maharashtra, tomatoes from Maharashtra and Karnataka have started arriving in the markets from the second week of August. Now tomatoes are coming from Nashik and Kolar, the biggest tomato producing areas of Maharashtra. Farmers are also stopping consumption of vegetables and sending large consignments to urban areas. He said that this is helping to control the prices. Importantly, Maharashtra and Karnataka are the only 2 states that produce off-season tomatoes between June and August.
