Mansa: People get 50-60 rupees of capsicum per kilo in the market, but they are being bought from the farmers at the price of the pods. Due to low prices, farmers are forced to sell capsicum at two to four rupees per kilo. The situation is that even the expenses of the farmers are not being met. Not only this, melon is also being sold at less than half the rate this time compared to last year.
Capsicum is cultivated on a large scale at village Bhaini Bhagha. Farmer Jagdev Singh, a capsicum grower at the village, said that this time traders are buying capsicum at two to three rupees per kg, while last year it was at the rate of Rs 20 per kg. The situation is that they are already incurring expenses.
On the other hand, another farmer, Harvinder Singh, says that due to the slogan of the government’s crop improvement, he had planted wheat and paddy. But vegetable farming has left them reeling. They are forced to throw it on the streets as the expenses are not met.
Jagdev Singh said that the farmers cultivating melon are also suffering loss. No one is asking even Rs 15 for melons, which were sold at Rs 40 per kg last year.
Farmers have demanded from the government that vegetables should be marketed like wheat and paddy. There should be government procurement of vegetables by fixing the MSP.
Farmer leader Ram Singh Bhaini Bagha said that the government needs to pay special attention to vegetable farmers. Vegetables should be subsidized along with proper marketing arrangements. So that agriculture does not go into loss. If the government does not pay attention, next year they will leave the cultivation of vegetables and only cultivate paddy and wheat.
