Ludhiana: The death toll rose to 11 due to a gas leak in Punjab’s Ludhiana on Sunday morning. The dead include 5 women and 4 men, including 2 children. The children are 10 and 13 years old. The accident took place at 7:15 am in a milk booth built in a building near Gyaspura Industrial Area of the city. Ludhiana SDM Swati said that 12 people fainted due to gas leakage. The official said that an area of 200 to 300 meters has been evacuated and the NDRF team has been called to the spot. Along with this, a team of doctors has also been invited.
After the incident, medical, fire brigade, police and NDRF teams have reached the spot. The sick people have been taken to the district hospital. MLA Rajinderpal Kaur said that the milk booth was open in the building and whoever went here to buy milk in the morning fainted. The administration has sealed off an area of one kilometer around the building.
Many people have been found unconscious within a radius of 300 meters of this building in a residential area. People of nearby houses and dhabas have also fainted. The administration conducted a search operation in the surrounding areas with the help of drones. Ludhiana Police Commissioner Mandeep Sidhu said that all the people have been taken out of the building where the incident took place.
A person named Kapil Kumar, a resident of the area, said that five members of his family have died. Kapil said that the family members were sleeping when the gas leaked. Along with this, he died due to the effect of gas.
It is not yet known which gas leaked in the area and what caused it. However, in the initial investigation, the smell of gas has been found to be like sewage gas. Now machines have been called for testing the gas.
Police Commissioner Mandeep Sidhu said that this may be due to acid in the sewer or the presence of any chemical inside may be the cause of this gas. However, only after the investigation, something can be said formally. The NDRF team wearing masks is trying to reach the building.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has expressed grief over this incident. In a tweet, Chief Minister Mann said that the gas leak incident of the factory in Ludhiana’s Gyaspura area is extremely sad. Police, administration and NDRF teams are present at the spot and all possible help is being extended.
