The threat of Nipah virus is looming in Kerala. Another case has come to light in Kozhikode on Friday. With this, a total of six cases of Nipah virus have been reported in Kerala. All educational institutions in Kozhikode have been closed till September 24. Kerala Health Minister Veena George has said that 1080 people who came in contact with the infected patient have been identified.

The matter of relief for the state government is that 11 samples sent for testing earlier were found to be negative. Two patients have died so far in the latest Nipah outbreak. Amid fears of disaster, the government has taken several steps. Kozhikode district of the state has been affected by the recent outbreak. A 47-year-old patient died here on August 30. After this, the central government is also on alert.

Team ready to deal with Nipah virus

A team of National Center for Disease Control, RML Hospital and National Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience has been formed about Nipah virus. This team is helping the Kerala government to control the virus. Meanwhile, the Indian Council of Medical Research has set up a biosafety level-3 containment mobile laboratory, which will help tackle the virus at the district level. With this, the virus can be identified and controlled in time.

1080 people came in contact with patients

This is the fourth time since 2018 that Nipah outbreak has increased in Kerala. Schools and offices have been ordered to close in the state. The affected gram panchayat of Kozhikode has been declared a quarantine zone. After identifying the latest 47-year-old patient, 15 samples of his contacts have been sent to the lab for testing. 1080 people who came in contact with the infected patient have been identified.

Of these, 213 are in the high-risk category. 287 health workers are also in the contact list. Four high-risk people have been kept in a private hospital and 17 people who came in contact with the patients have been kept under observation at the Kozhikode Medical College.

School-college closed, no change

The Union Health Ministry has also held a high-level meeting in view of the Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala. Officials of the Kozhikode district administration were also involved in it. In view of the danger, the state government has closed the schools and colleges of the district. All educational institutions in Kozhikode have been closed till September 24.
