Ban on Indian Students in Australia: Two more universities in Australia have banned the admission of some Indian students in response to fresh concerns over a rise in fake visa applications.

Federation University in Victoria and Western Sydney University in New South Wales had last week written to education agents not to admit students from Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh as well as the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

“The university has observed a significant increase in the proportion of visa applications refused by the Department of Home Affairs from certain Indian regions,” the federation said in a letter to university agents.

“We had hoped this would prove to be a short-term issue (but) it is now clear that a trend is emerging,” the letter, published in The Herald, said.

Last month, Australian universities including Victoria University, Edith Cowan University, Torrance University and Southern Cross University banned students from some Indian states in response to an increase in fraudulent applications seeking to work and not study. was

“A significant number of Indian students commencing studies in 2022 have not been enrolled, resulting in a high attrition rate,” the University of Western Sydney told agents in a message sent on May 8.

The university has identified Punjab, Gujarat and Haryana as the regions with the highest attrition risk. Western Sydney University said the ban will be in place for at least two months – May and June 2023. It added that “additional measures will be taken to address the issue of non-genuine students entering the university from these areas, including changes in application screening, stricter admission requirements and an increase in initiation fees”. .

The report said that one in four applications from India are now being deemed “bogus” or “non-genuine” by the Department of Home Affairs. Australia is reportedly set to admit its highest ever number of Indian students in 2019, surpassing the previous high of 75,000.
