In 1897, along with his son Yashwant Rao, he opened a hospital for the treatment of plague patients. On 28 January 1853, he established the Infanticide Prevention Home for pregnant rape victims. Savitribai worked together with her husband in the nineteenth century against evils like untouchability, Sati Pratha, child-marriage and prohibition of widow remarriage. While taking care of the plague patients, she herself became a victim of it and died on 10 March 1897.

Despite social discrimination and many obstacles, Savitribai Phule completed her education and took the initiative to educate other women as well. Savitribai Phule is called India’s first female teacher and the first leader of the women’s liberation movement. She along with her husband revolutionary leader Jyotirao Phule had opened 18 schools for girls. The first school was opened in 1848, the Pune Balika Vidyalaya. Savitribai opposed such evil practices prevalent in the society which were especially against women. She raised her voice against Satipratha, child-marriage and prohibition of widow remarriage and fought for the same for the rest of her life. He stopped a widowed Brahmin woman from committing suicide and adopted her newborn son. He was named Yashwant Rao. He was educated and made a doctor.
