Chandigarh: IAS officer Sanjay Popli, who has been in jail for a year in corruption and disproportionate assets cases, has been granted bail by the Punjab-Haryana High Court. He has been granted bail by the High Court for six days with the conditions of taking care of his ailing wife and his son’s first birthday. He will be on bail from June 23 to 28.

He will have to surrender on June 29. However, he will not be able to go out of the city during the bail period. Along with this, he will also have to share his phone number with the police. Strict action will be taken against any violation of the rules.

The Vigilance Bureau arrested him on June 21 last year on the complaint of a contractor residing in Karnal. The contractor had lodged a complaint against Popli on the anti-corruption helpline. He alleged that the official demanded a one percent bribe to clear the bill. This bill was related to the Rs 7 crore sewage project in Nawanshahr during the Congress government. He was the first IAS officer to be arrested in a corruption case after the new government came to power. Vigilance conducted a lot of investigation after his arrest. Meanwhile, a case was registered against him by the Chandigarh Police under the Arms Act. Then his son committed suicide. However, at that time the family members also accused the police officers. Earlier, he had applied for bail from the district court to the High Court but was unsuccessful.
