Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the third session of a multi-stakeholder National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (NPDRR) on Friday. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) gave this information in a statement on Monday. The theme of the third session of NPDRR is “Building Local Resilience in a Changing Climate”. According to the PMO, this theme is related to the 10-point agenda announced by the Prime Minister for building local capacities in the wake of climate change, especially in the context of rapidly changing disaster risk scenarios.
The NPDRR is attended by 1000 distinguished guests including Union Ministers, State Disaster Management Ministers, Members of Parliament, heads of local self-government, heads of specialized disaster management agencies, academicians, representatives of private sector organizations, media and civil society. NPDRR is a multi-stakeholder national forum headed by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah. All the stakeholders in this forum discuss and exchange views on ideas, practices and trends regarding Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).
Will help in mainstreaming disaster management practices: The PMO said the third session will also help in mainstreaming disaster management practices among ministries and departments, states and union territories, urban and rural local-self-government, educational institutions, NGOs, CSOs, PSUs and communities. Organized jointly by the Ministry of Home Affairs, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), the NPDRR will consist of four plenary sessions, one ministerial session and eight thematic sessions.
Special ministerial session will be organized: The inauguration ceremony will be followed by a special ministerial session chaired by Shah, where ministers from the Centre, states and union territories will deliberate on further strengthening the disaster risk reduction systems at various levels. Over the two days, subject matter experts, practitioners, academicians and representatives will deliberate on various identified critical issues on disaster risk reduction, based on the Sendai Framework and the 10-point agenda on disaster risk reduction given by Prime Minister Modi.
The PMO said that prior to this programme, 19 programs on specific themes related to disaster risk management (eg, heat wave, coastal hazards, enhancing leadership of women in disaster risk management) were organized in the last two months in more than a dozen cities across the country. have been done. Information about the findings and recommendations of these 19 programs organized earlier will be given in the third session of NPDRR to be held in New Delhi on 10-11 March 2023. The first and second sessions of NPDRR were held in 2013 and 2017.
