New York school will have Diwali holiday

Diwali Declared School Holiday: The festival of Diwali will be added to the list of school holidays to recognize the growth of South Asian and Indo-Caribbean communities in New York City, America. Mayor Eric Adams made the announcement. The new holiday will replace Brooklyn-Queens Day on the school vacation calendar.

Diwali is usually celebrated in October or November. The holiday is celebrated by millions of New Yorkers and the announcement comes after state lawmakers recently passed legislation to create the holiday in the nation’s largest school system.

The mayor made the announcement by tweeting

Mayor Eric Adams called the decision a significant victory for local families. “So proud to stand with Assemblywoman Jennifer Rajkumar and community leaders in the fight to make Diwali a school holiday,” the mayor tweeted. I know it’s already early in the year. Happy Diwali anyway.”

The mayor said he is confident Gov. Cathy Hochul will sign the bill. This decision has yet to be signed into law by Governor Cathy Hochul. The new holiday will replace “Brooklyn-Queens Day” on the school vacation calendar.

The demand was being made for a long time

Indeed, many families in New York are seeking time off from the city’s public schools to celebrate several major religious or cultural celebrations, along with current holidays such as Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Christmas. In light of this, in 2015 it was announced in New York that it would hold school holidays in honor of two major Muslim holidays, Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha.

Since then, many South Asian and Indo-Caribbean parents were disappointed that Diwali was not included in the list. Diwali is a big day according to Hindu religious customs which is also celebrated by Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists. Although Mayor Eric promised to keep it a holiday before the election, he later failed to deliver.
