Pune: Congress candidate Ravindra Dhangekar is ahead of his rivals in Kasba seat, while BJP candidate Ravindra Dhangekar is leading in the Kasba seat, according to the initial trends of counting of votes released on Thursday for the bypolls to two assembly seats in Maharashtra’s Pune district. Ashwini Jagtap has taken a lead on the Chinchwad seat. According to election officials, in Kasba seat, Dhangekar is leading over BJP candidate Hemant Rasane.

In Chinchwad, Ashwini Jagtap of BJP is leading by more than 1100 votes in the third round. In Kasba, Congress candidate Ravindra Dhangekar is leading over BJP’s Hemant Rasane by 2200 votes.

The death of BJP MLAs Mukta Tilak (Kasba) and Laxman Jagtap (Chinchwad) necessitated the bypolls to both the seats. The by-elections were held on 26 February and the average turnout was 50 per cent. The election is witnessing a close contest between the BJP and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance of the Congress, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Shiv Sena (the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction).

The Kasba constituency is located in the old area of Pune city and the MVA is supporting Congress candidate Ravindra Dhangekar. In Chinchwad, an industrial town near Pune, the contest is believed to be between BJP’s Ashwini Jagtap, NCP’s Nana Kate and independent Rahul Kalate.
