Janic Siner won the Australian Open for the first time, losing to Daniil Medvedev in the final
Italy's Janic Ciner has won the men's singles title at the Australian Open 2024. In the final match played at Melbourne Park on January 28 (Sunday), Siner defeated third seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. Sinner is the first Italian player to win the title. The final match lasted for three hours and 44 minutes.
In the final match, the fourth-seeded Sinner initially struggled against the Russian, but began to pick up the pace as the match progressed. Sinner broke Medvedev's dream by winning the last three sets after losing the first two sets. Medvedev has lost in the Australian Open for the third time in the final match. They also missed out on the title in 2021 and 2022.
Sinner reached the final of a Grand Slam for the first time and won his first final. If seen, after 10 years, a new champion has appeared in the Australian Open men's singles. The last time Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka did this feat was in 2014. Since 2014, only Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have been champions.
Janic Siner made a big splash by defeating Serbia's Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals. In the semifinals, Djokovic had to face a defeat at the hands of Sinner 1-6, 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 3-6. The 22-year-old Sinner has been in tremendous form in recent times. Sinner has won 20 of the last 21 matches. Sinner has won two ATP titles and the Davis Cup since October. Medvedev defeated Germany's Alexander Zverev 5-7, 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(5), 6-3 in the other semifinal match.
