Minimum Broadband Internet Speed in India: For the users suffering from the slow speed of the internet, a decision of the government is going to give a big relief. The government has changed the definition of broadband connectivity by increasing the minimum download speed to 2 Mpbs. This means that now users will get download speed of at least 2 megabits per second. This decision will benefit crores of users of the country and they will be able to use internet with fast speed. For your information, let us tell you that earlier the minimum download speed was only 512 kbps.
The government has revised the definition of broadband connectivity to two Mbps (megabits per second) minimum download speed. This information has been received from a gazette notification. Earlier, the DoT had benchmarked it at 512 Kbps (kilobytes per second) as the minimum download speed in the definition notified in July 2013.
The notification states, changing the definition of broadband issued vide notification dated 18 July 2013 and after considering the proposal of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the Central Government has amended the definition of broadband. This notification has come into force from January 25, 2023. There were about 82.54 crore broadband subscribers in the country as on November 30, 2022, of which 79.35 crore were wireless broadband users and the rest were wireline users.
