On 9 September, at the Bharat Mandapam in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the African Union’s accession to the G20. With this, the G20 formed 26 years ago in 1997 has now become the G21. The African Union is an organization created by Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 1963 to liberate African countries.

Gaddafi challenged the Western countries by uniting African countries through this organization. Now India has united the western countries included in the G-20 and included the African Union in the world’s most powerful economic organization.

In this story we will know what the African Union is, what India wants to achieve by joining the G-20-

On May 25, 1963, 32 African nations gathered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It was a period when most of the countries in Africa were under the control of Western countries like Britain and France. The purpose of gathering all these leaders on one platform was to liberate Africa from the clutches of Western countries. During the meeting, 32 African countries formed an organization known as the Organization of African Unity (OAU).

While giving an emotional speech during this meeting, King Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia said – the people living in Africa are the same as the people of other countries in the world. They are neither less nor more than anyone. Until African countries get independence, our mission will not be fulfilled.

By 1981, the organization began to face criticism in Africa and other parts of the world. Critics said that this organization has become only a club of dictators. It neither protected the rights of African citizens nor achieved its goals.

Nine years later, Libyan dictator Muammar al-Gaddafi took charge of reviving the African Union. The same Gaddafi who openly expressed his opinion against the domination of Western countries in the world from the forum of the United Nations. His style made him famous not only in Libya but throughout Africa.

During the OAU summit in Algeria in July 1999, Gaddafi declared that the time had come for Africa to unite. The charter adopted in 1963 should be replaced. For this, Gaddafi invited the leaders of African countries to the capital city of Libya. On September 9, Gaddafi presented his vision in the city of Sirte. That is, it has been advised to unite all African countries to form the United States of Africa on the lines of America. In 2002, the OAU was transformed into the African Union in South Africa.

Gaddafi invested the money he earned from Libya’s oil reserves in this organization. On this initiative of Gaddafi, the African leaders gave him the title of son of Africa. African countries decided to work together. Since then, this organization acts as a link between African countries. It now includes 55 African countries.
