Bureau report : The price of tomato has crossed 100 rupees per kg in most markets of the country. While in the wholesale market it is getting 70 to 75 rupees per kg. A week ago, it was selling at Rs 30 to Rs 35 in the wholesale market. Its price in the retail market was Rs 40-50 per kg, which means the price has doubled.

A month ago, in May, tomatoes were selling at Rs 2-5 per kg in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and many other cities. That is, the price of tomato has increased by 1900% in one month. Due to the price of tomato being Rs 2, the farmers had started destroying the crop in the field itself, because more money was being spent when the crop reached the market.

4 reasons for increasing the price of tomatoes

Tomato crop has been damaged due to rain in many states.
Some parts are experiencing intense heat due to which production has been reduced
Demand for tomatoes is high in neighboring states.
In many places, the production of tomato in one year decreased compared to the previous year

A tomato trader in Delhi’s Azadpur wholesale market said that the price of tomatoes has doubled in a week. The reason for this is the shortage of tomatoes in states like Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. To meet the demand of tomatoes, tomatoes are being ordered from other states, due to which the transportation cost has increased.

There will be shortage in tomatoes in 2 months

With the new crop of tomatoes, prices are expected to come down in 1-2 months. According to the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, when the tomato plants are three months old, tomatoes can be plucked from them twice a week. These plants give a crop in 1-2 months, although it also depends on the variety, soil and environment.
