Tea is a low-calorie drink, so it does not directly cause weight gain. However, the ingredients in tea can contribute to weight gain in some cases. Here we tell you three reasons why your regular tea can make you gain weight.

The first reason is the full cream milk used in the tea. Adding full cream milk to tea increases its calories. Milk contains fat and consuming more of it can lead to weight gain. “One cup of tea contains 33-66 calories depending on the milk fat percentage,” explains Lima Mahajan.

You can use skimmed milk instead of full cream to reduce the calories of the tea. Apart from this, the sugar found in it is also the cause of weight gain. Also, if you take unhealthy snacks like biscuits or salty snacks with tea, you gain weight.

How to drink tea to lose weight?

When it comes to weight loss, moderation is the key i.e. controlling yourself in terms of eating and drinking. By drinking more tea, your body gets more caffeine and unhealthy compounds found in it, which can adversely affect your health.

“Limit your tea intake to two cups a day so you can enjoy it and keep your weight under control,” says Lima Mahajan.

Keep a gap between tea and meal time
Drinking tea immediately before or after a meal can hinder digestion and absorption of nutrients. It is advisable to leave at least 30 minutes between drinking tea and your meal to optimize your weight loss efforts. This practice gives your body time to effectively absorb the nutrients from your food.

Avoid drinking tea before going to bed
If tea is consumed just before bedtime, it can disrupt sleep patterns and digestion. Adequate sleep is essential for weight control because sleep helps your body’s hormones function properly, which is essential for your overall health. Avoid drinking tea within a few hours of going to bed for a good night’s sleep.
