Bureau report : The Sikh community has won a big victory in Australia. The Supreme Court of Queensland has overturned the law banning Siri Sahib in schools. That is, now Sikh children can wear kirpan inside schools. The government’s decision was challenged in the Supreme Court by a Sikh woman. The Queensland Supreme Court has ruled that this ban is unconstitutional under the Racial Discrimination Act RDA.
Although earlier, the Queensland government had made a law to allow Sikhs to keep Siri Sahib, but under this, keeping Siri Sahib in schools was banned. Against this, Kamaljit Kaur challenged the government’s decision in the court. Patishkarta had claimed that not allowing the religious symbol Kirpan to be carried in the school came under the Racial Discrimination Act. However, the Supreme Court had initially rejected the claim of the petitioner Kamaljit Kaur that the Act made by the government regarding firearms is discriminatory.
However, after this, when Kamaljit Kaur again appealed to the Supreme Court, the ban imposed by the government on taking Siri Sahib to school was wrong. This decision of the Supreme Court is being seen as a big victory for the Sikh community.
