SGPC was last elected in 2011

SGPC elections were last held in 2011 on the directives of the central government. Sromani Akali Dal had won a landslide victory in it. But the Sahajdhari organization had challenged it in the Punjab Haryana High Court due to the deprivation of the right to vote. Due to the voting rights of Sahajdharis under the Gurdwara Act 1925, the court ruled in favor of the Sahajdhari organization and canceled the 2011 elections. When SGPC challenged this decision in the Supreme Court, the court stayed the decision of the High Court and directed the committee, which has been running since 2007, to work till the decision. In 2016, the Modi government, on the recommendation of the Akali Dal, threatened the voting rights of Sahajdharis by amending the Gurdwara Act, a few days later when the hearing was held, the SGPC informed the court about the Centre’s decision and then the court upheld the SGPC’s decision. Proclaiming the decision in favor, approved the selected committee of 2011.

Opposition questions, Akali Dal’s answer

When the Supreme Court’s decision came in 2016, the opposition parties demanded that the SGPC elections should be held as soon as possible, but the Akali Dal’s argument was that since the 2011 committee was approved by the Supreme Court in 2016, it will take 5 years. The tenure will begin now. But in 2021, the tenure of the 2011 committee also ended, but despite this, the SGPC elections did not take place. But now the way the Gurdwara Election Commission has instructed the DC of all districts and the Punjab government to prepare the voter list, the central government can soon announce the SGPC election. Considering the current political situation, the election of the Sromani Committee this time will not be easy for the Akali Dal.
