Bureau Report: You must have heard many times the news of racial attacks on Sikhs abroad. But the news that has come out now will surprise and disturb you. A Sikh patient was misbehaved by the nursing staff in the hospital, hearing which will fill your heart with anger. The nurses tied the chin of this Sikh who was fighting for life and death with plastic globes. He was deliberately given food which he could not eat due to religious reasons. After doing such behavior, the nursing staff laughed at him, when the patient rang the bell and called the nursing staff for help, they did not come, sometimes the beds were soaked with urine. His turban used to fall down but no one picked it up. Instead of taking care of the patient, he was harassed. All this was done because of racial discrimination. This came to light when the Sikh patient died. The family found a note written in Punjabi by the patient in which he had written all the bones he had with him.
From the leaked report of NMC i.e. Nursing and Midwifery Council, this behavior of the Sikh patient has been revealed. Despite the complaint made by the patient’s family, no investigation was conducted against any of the nursing staff nor were they removed from duty. The report clearly shows how the nursing staff used to racially discriminate against the patients but it has been completely ignored. It has also come out that all this has been going on for the last 15 years.
After the complaint of the Sikh family, the NMC had closed the case, but now that the report has been leaked, it is being re-investigated. First of all, the case of racial discrimination by NMC i.e. Nursing and Midwife Council staff came to light in 2008. The documents reveal how black and ethnic minority staff feared action would be taken against them if they spoke out.
The report also revealed that the NMC was more concerned about its reputation than improving the situation. That is why he tried to suppress this whole matter continuously. NMC’s reputation was already at stake because of nurse Lucy Latby. Lucy is the same nurse who was convicted in the same year for the murder of 7 newborn babies. Lucy was arrested between June 2015 and June 2016 following a series of infant deaths at the neonatal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital in North West England.
The regulator has now launched an investigation into when and how minority and black community nurses and patients have been treated. NMC CEO Andrea has apologized for the racial discrimination that has happened so far and has assured that such behavior will not happen to patients or nursing staff in the future. We need to learn from our mistakes and improve upon them. We will now examine all that has come before us so far. For this we have appointed an external impartial investigation member. We will try our best to ensure that the results of the investigation are fair and the accused are punished.
