This incident is from October-November 1928. A vigorous movement against the British rule was going on in Lahore. The mob was aggressive under the leadership of Lala Lajpat Roy. Slogans were also raised. Black flags were also shown. Sensing the heat of the agitation, the police panicked and British SP James A. Scott ordered a lathicharge. British soldiers attacked the crowd. Lala Lajpat Rai was also lathi-charged on his head and taken to the hospital in critical condition where he breathed his last on today i.e. 17 November 1928.

In his wounded state, he had said – a stick falling on him would prove to be the last nail in the coffin of the British Empire, and so it happened. The movement in the country intensified. When the British started to lose their footing, they never got back on their feet.

That sign is in Pakistan

Lala Lajpat Rai was also known as Sher-e-Punjab and Punjab Kesari. His father was a teacher and mother a social worker. Parents had a complete influence on their lives. He was known for working for education. He was considered as Dayananda Saraswati. He believed in Arya Samaj. He was also a lawyer and a politician. He was also a writer and journalist. Lala Lajpat Rai is credited with establishing Punjab National Bank, one of the largest banks in the country. He was at the forefront of establishing DAV schools in Lahore. Other educational institutions were established in different parts of the country.

One of his works still stands proudly in Pakistan. That is Gulab Devi TV Hospital. In the year 1927, his mother Gulab Devi died of tuberculosis. Then Lala Lajpat Rai immediately decided to build a hospital.

Built with a capital of Rs. 2 lakh

At that time a trust was formed with a capital of Rs.2 lakhs. In the year 1931, the trust purchased 40 acres of land from the government. The government gave 10 acres of land. In the year 1934, it became a 50-bed hospital. Mahatma Gandhi inaugurated this hospital on 17 July 1934. When India and Pakistan were partitioned, this hospital played a major role.

People from here came forward to treat the refugees who arrived in Pakistan from India. Hearing the discussion about the hospital, Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, also reached the hospital on 6 November 1947 with his sister. He praised the doctors, nurses and other staff of the hospital and thanked them all for their selfless services.

This hospital has become quite big now. This hospital with one and a half thousand beds is helping the people of Pakistan. The Trust itself is taking this forward but is also playing a leading role in medical education. It is a hospital affiliated to Fatima Jinnah Medical College. The trust also has its own medical college in the campus.

A hospital was built where Gulab Devi died

It is said that the hospital was built on the spot where Gulab Devi died. Today a small hospital is providing healing shade to Pakistan in the form of a banyan tree. DAV schools/colleges opened in India and Pakistan are spreading their light.

Lala Lajpat Rai had great influence on Sardar Bhagat Singh. They decided to punish SP James A Scott, who was found guilty of their murder. Bhagat Singh discussed with Chandrasekhar Azad, Sukhdev and Rajguru. All the freedom fanatics got ready and attacked. But Scott survived the attack and the other officer, John, was killed. The crazed attackers have not been identified. Bhagat Singh was later sentenced to death for John’s murder.
