India has recorded an increase of 159 new Covid-19 infections in a day, the Union Health Ministry said on Saturday. Meanwhile, the number of active cases of the disease in the country has reached 1,623. According to the latest data released by the ministry at 8 am, Kerala has reported one death due to infection in 24 hours.

The number of daily Covid-19 cases in the country had declined till December 5 but saw a surge after the emergence of new forms and colder weather conditions. After December 5 till December 31, 841 new cases were reported in a single day which was the highest. About 92 percent of the total active cases are recovering in quarantine.

Currently available data suggest that the JN.1 variant is neither leading to a rapid increase in new cases nor an increase in hospitalizations and deaths.”

India has seen three waves of Covid-19 with the peak incidence of daily new cases and deaths recorded in the delta wave during Aprilโ€“June 2021.

According to the ministry's website, the number of people who have recovered from the disease is more than 4.4 crore, with a national recovery rate of 98.81 percent. The Ministry said that 220.67 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered in the country so far.
