Hardline Sikh leader Amritpal Singh has gone absconding on the second day of Punjab Police crackdown on Waris Punjab Day, while two more FIRs have been registered against him – in connection with the recovery of a weapon from an abandoned car. Deputy Inspector General of Police (Jalandhar range) Swapan Sharma was asked on Sunday whether Amritpal Singh was planning to flee to Canada via Nepal and whether his wife had sought a Canadian visa. On this Sharma said that it is a possibility but it is a matter of investigation.

‘This marriage is a message of reverse migration’

According to reports, 29-year-old Amritpal Singh married UK-based NRI Kirandeep Kaur in February this year. The marriage took place in Amritpal Singh’s native village Jallupur Kheda, Amritsar. Amritpal Singh said after his marriage that his wife would stay with him in Punjab as this marriage was a message of reverse migration and he wanted all Punjabi migrants to return to the state. Kirandeep’s family is reportedly from Jalandhar.

The journey from driver to ‘Waris Punjab De’

Before Deep Sidhu’s heir became chief of Punjab Dey, Amritpal Singh used to be a truck driver in Dubai when he allegedly went insane and became a Khalistani sympathiser. Police told that he came in contact with ISI agents in Dubai. The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Sunday issued a notice to the Punjab government on a petition seeking the ‘release’ of Amritpal Singh. Petitioner Iman Singh Khara claimed that Amritpal Singh was “illegally and forcibly” detained by the police.
