History records the names of 21 Sikhs who refused to surrender to the 10,000 Afghan army at the Battle of Saragarhi, before 12 September. Today is the 124th anniversary of that war and the story of the bravery of those Sikhs. The Battle of Saragarhi, one of the most daring battles in history, was fought on 12 September 1897 between 21 Sikh soldiers of the British Indian Army and 10,000 Afghans.

The battle was fought in the village of Samana in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, which was then a part of India. In this battle, all 21 soldiers of 36 Sikh regiment fought bravely against the Afghans till their last breath and are remembered as ‘superheroes’ in history. Saragarhi used to connect two forts
Saragarhi was a small village in Kohat district. This area was then a part of India which now falls in Pakistan. The British government occupied the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region but feared attacks from rebel Pashtuns. Saragarhi served as a communication post between the two forts of Lockhart and Gulistan. These two forts served as the two headquarters of the British Indian Army in the North-West Region. There was only a few kilometers between them but it was difficult to see from one fort to the other. So Saragarhi used to provide exchange of messages.

Several attacks have already been foiled
If you have seen the Bollywood movie ‘Kesari’ then you will understand its story well and the bravery shown by the Sikh soldiers in that war. Between 27 August and 11 September 1897, the Pashtuns made several attacks to capture the British headquarters but the 36 Sikh Regiment under the command of Colonel Houghton prevented them from succeeding. The heliograph, which used sunlight to send messages, provided communication and information between Saragarhi and the British headquarters. On 12 September 1897, 10,000 Pashtuns attacked Saragarhi with the aim of destroying the route between the two forts.

21 Sikhs are more than ten thousand Afghans
Sikh soldiers fought the biggest battle in history. 21 The Sikhs fought 10,000 Afghans and killed 600 Pashtuns, resulting in martyrdom. Ishar Singh, the leader of the regiment, killed more than 20 enemies. This fight is great because everyone knew the outcome. Despite this, the Sikh soldiers fought for their country and held off the advance of 10,000 soldiers for a day until reinforcements arrived.

As soon as the news was received, the British Parliament stood up
When the news of this war reached Britain, the British Parliament also stood in honor of the Sikh soldiers in London. The Government of India erected a memorial plaque in honor of the soldiers of 36 Sikh Regiment. The British built two shrines in memory of these 21 warriors. One near Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar and the other in Ferozepur Cantonment. Even after 124 years, 12 September is celebrated as Saragarhi Day.
