Voting has started for by-elections in 7 assembly seats of 6 states of the country. These states include Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Kerala, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand, where elections are being held on 1 seat each, while votes will be held on 2 seats in Tripura.
According to the Election Commission, elections will be held for Ghosi in Uttar Pradesh, Bageshwar in Uttarakhand, Dhupguri in Bengal, Dumri in Jharkhand, Puthupalli in Kerala, Baksanagar in Tripura and Dhanpur seats. The results of these elections will come on September 8. Elections are being held in Ghosi and Dhanpur seats due to the resignation of the existing MLAs. Elections are being held in the remaining 5 seats due to the death of the current MLA.

This is being considered as the first election test of the ‘India’ alliance formed by the opposition parties to unite against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre.

The opposition alliance is jointly contesting the Ghosi seat in Uttar Pradesh, Dumri in Jharkhand, Dhanpur in Tripura, Boxnagar and Bageshwar in Uttarakhand, while the alliance partners in West Bengal’s Dhupaguri and Kerala’s Puthupalli seats. – They are contesting elections against others.
