Violent protest by Banjara community against reservation in Karnataka, Shikaripura road blocked

Karnataka People of Banjara community are protesting vigorously regarding reservation. On Tuesday, their protest took a violent form. Banjaras gathered in large numbers blocked the Shikaripura road.

Why Banjara community people are opposing reservation

The protesters allege that less reservation has been given to the Scheduled Castes belonging to the Banjara community. In fact, the Karnataka cabinet had last week decided to introduce internal reservation among the Scheduled Castes. The state government had also written a letter to the Center recommending that the proposal be included in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution.

People of Banjara community targeted BS Yeddyurappa’s house

Members of the Banjara community targeted the house of BJP strongman BS Yeddyurappa in Shikaripura town and pelted stones in protest against the internal reservation announced by the state government for scheduled castes, injuring some policemen. Prohibitory orders under section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) have been imposed in the town.

Reacting to the incidents, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai blamed the Congress behind the violence. He said, local Congress leaders are instigating people. The Congress is unable to digest the social justice done to every community and has resorted to inciting violence. Banjara community should not come under the influence of rumours. Meanwhile, Yediyurappa said that the incident took place due to a misunderstanding.

Police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the large number of protestors, injuring some members of the Banjara community. The protesters gathered near Yediyurappa’s house and started pelting stones, breaking some window panes. Seeing the situation getting out of control, additional forces were called in the area.

Karnataka decides to end four per cent reservation for minorities

The Karnataka government announced its decision to scrap the four per cent reservation for ‘religious minorities’ and add it to the existing reservation for the two major communities in the state. The four per cent reservation for minorities in Karnataka will now be distributed equally and added to the existing reservation for Vokkaligas and Lingayat communities in the state. Two new reservation categories 2C and 2D were created for the Vokkaligas and Lingayat communities during the Belagavi assembly session last year.
