New Delhi/Chennai: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday conducted raids in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka in two cases of blasts in Coimbatore and Mangaluru. Its official spokesperson gave this information. Raids were conducted at 40 locations, of which 32 are in connection with the Coimbatore car bombings and eight are related to the Mangaluru blasts. One of these cases pertains to the explosion of a car carrying explosives in front of the Kottai Easwaran temple in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu.

The agency spokesperson said the accused Jamesha Mubeen was planning to carry out a suicide attack and cause massive damage to the temple complex on October 23 last year after taking an oath of allegiance to ISIS. The spokesman said that his aim was to spread terror in the society.

The second case pertains to the pressure cooker bomb blast in a moving auto-rickshaw in Karnataka’s Mangaluru city on November 19 last year. The blast took place when the accused was transporting the explosive device to be planted at a public place. A large number of digital devices and Rs 4 lakh in cash were seized in the raid, the spokesman said. He said that further investigation is going on in both these cases.

Raids related to Coimbatore case In Tamil Nadu and Kerala – Coimbatore (14), Trichy (1), Nilgiris (2), Tirunelveli (3), Tuticorin (1), Chennai (3), Thiruvannamalai (2), Dindigul (1), 32 locations including Myladuthurai (1), Krishnagiri (1), Kanyakumari (1), Tenkasi (1) and Ernakulam (1).

The agency conducted searches at eight locations – Tiruppur (2) and Coimbatore (1) in Tamil Nadu, Ernakulam (4) in Kerala and Mysore (1) in Karnataka – in connection with the Mangaluru case. The raids in Tamil Nadu began at 5 am amid local police security and went on for several hours. The places that were raided include the residence of a software engineer in Tiruchirappalli and Mayiladuthurai house of a father-son duo working as car drivers in Muscat.

Aadhaar card, SIM and a mobile phone were seized after a raid in Tirunelveli district. In Tenkasi, the house of a woman who was in phone contact with some of the suspects in the Coimbatore case was raided. In Chennai, investigating officers reached the house of a man against whom raids were conducted earlier in connection with the Coimbatore blasts. After the raid, he told reporters that there was no need for him to hide, delete messages from his phone or change equipment as he was not related to any person who is under NIA probe. (agency)
