Travel and tourism leaders have called for a global effort in order to make climate-ready travel a reality, following a report by Envisioning Tourism in 2030 & Beyond that emphasises that policy and investment shifts are needed.
The Travel Foundation report shows the impact of different interventions taking also into account technological advances, alternative fuels and electrification, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
The same notes that these could have a significant impact on reducing CO2 in the decades ahead. The report aims to help achieve zero carbon emissions until 2050.
“We have delayed action for too long, and as a result, our options have narrowed. There is a huge opportunity for travel and tourism in a decarbonising world, but we must act with urgency and unite in our vision for a ‘good’ transition,” Jeremy Sampson, The Travel Foundation CEO pointed out in this regard.
Sampson said that the main purpose of the research is to understand the envision how the travel and tourism sector will look in 2030 and beyond as the countries focus more on net zero emissions.
The Travel Foundation’s CEO Jeremy Sampson noted that the intention is not to prescribe a set of measures or roadmap while stressing that the Travel Foundation explored scenarios in which the travel and tourism sector projected increase could be compatible with achieving the climate targets mentioned in the Glasgow Declaration, which stem from the Paris Agreement.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) previously urged the EU countries to immediately work on surging the use of SAF (sustainable aviation fuels) that would help achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Through a press release, IATA recalled that until 2050, SAF could account for about 65 per cent of aviation’s carbon mitigation after investments to expand the product’s capacity production are expected to increase from 125 million litres to a total of five billion by 2050.
Last year, European Countries Endorsed the “Toulouse Declaration”the first private and public initiative with the main purpose to help the European aviation industry to achieve its goal.
The Airports Council International said that this was the first common initiative of this kind taken by countries worldwide.
Authorities in European countries are continuously working together in order to achieve such a goal and help decarbonize the tourism sector.
The report of Travel Foundation also calls on organisations in the tourism sector to sign the Glasgow Declaration, and begin identifying and providing low as well as net zero tourism options.
