Over 77,000 applications for asylum were registered by authorities in Italy last year, well below compared to those recorded in other countries such as Germany, Spain and France.

Such conclusions were reached in the annual report provided by the Italian Refugee Council (CIR) for last year, while the same revealed that the conflict in Ukraine brought a total of 173,598 refugees to Italy, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

โ€œThe year 2022 was particularly complex for asylum applications in Italy and in Europe: the conflict in Ukraine caused nearly eight million refugees, and it has pushed 173,589 people to seek shelter in Italy (data from the Ministry of the Interior until December 31, 2022),โ€ the report revealed.

The same noted that such a scenario required constant commitment and actions in order to protect and integrate the refugees.

The annual report of the Italian Refugee Council for last year noted that asylum applications in Italy were over a third of those recorded in Germany in 2022 during which year the country accepted 217,735 applications filed for international protection.

Authorities in France (137,505) and Spain (116,140) also registered a higher number of asylum applications in 2022, as the total number of asylum requests was slightly over one third of those in Germany, France and Spain or 35 per cent 56 per cent and 66 per cent more specifically.

โ€œWith regards to the Italian asylum system, the examined requests were 52,625: 53 per cent the rejections (27,385), 12 per cent (6,161) were recognized refugee status, and 13 per cent benefited from subsidiary protection (6,770) and 21 per cent those who were granted special protection (10,865),โ€ the report revealed.

The report notes that the rate is declining in comparison to 2021 figures by a total of nine per cent.

Commenting on the data, the President of CIR, Roberto Zaccaria, said no crisis is unmanageable but European commitment is needed.

Regarding those arriving by boat, those who arrived in the Italian coastline totalled 105,140, based on the data provided by the Italian Ministry of Interior, while figures provided by IOM revealed that 1,417 of them died or went missing in the Central Mediterranean.

President Zaccaria also noted that the figures mentioned above tell a different story in comparison to what is perceived, while considering that managing the migration influx that reaches Italian coasts is truly complex.
