Chandigarh: Senior Akali leader and spokesperson of the party Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema has raised big questions on the AAP government of Punjab. The opposition has accused the ruling party of alleged irregularities and pressure on the ruling party in the by-election held on May 10 in Jalandhar. It is being continuously imposed and a fair investigation is being demanded.

He tweeted that the way the ruling party of Punjab registered criminal cases against the leaders of the opposition parties during the Jalandhar by-election is disturbing, highly illegal and undemocratic.

During any election, the concerned civil and police administration functions directly under the command and control of the ECI. But they looked helpless in the Jalandhar Parliament by-election.

Neither the civil nor the police administration came to the aid of the opposition parties who repeatedly complained against the unauthorized presence of a large number of ruling party MLAs and other leaders at various polling booths. Even the observers appointed by the commission failed miserably to take action. Later, false cases were filed against all those who opposed the unauthorized presence and other electoral malpractices by the ruling party legislators and leaders.

The ECI should order an independent inquiry into all incidents and hold accountable the officials who colluded with the ruling party and failed to perform their duties effectively and restore the confidence of the people and political parties in the ECI. Strict action should be taken.
