In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that 2,48,895 posts are vacant in Group C posts while 2070 posts are vacant in Group A and B posts across all zones of the Railways. As per the notifications, a total of 1,28,349 candidates have been shortlisted for Group ‘C’ posts (excluding Level-I).
According to the notification, a total of 1,47,280 candidates have been shortlisted for Level-1 posts. Direct recruitment for Group ‘A’ services on Indian Railways is mainly done by UPSC. Now demand has been placed on UPSC and DoPT.

Let it be known that the Railway Department has recently issued a notification for the recruitment of 9739 Constable and Sub-Inspector, 27019 Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) and Technician Grade Posts, 62907 Group D Posts, 9500 RPF Recruitment Posts and 798 Posts in RPF. .

Know- For which group the qualification is sought
Group A: Recruitment to posts in this group is usually conducted by UPSC through Civil Services Examination, Engineering Services Examination and Combined Medical Services Examination.
Group B: Group B posts are combined with Section Officer grade-upgraded posts from Group ‘C’ Railway employees on deputation basis.
Group C: Posts in this group are generally Station Master, Ticket Collector, Clerk, Commercial Apprentice, Security Staff, Traffic Apprentice, Engineering Posts (Electrical, Signal & Telecom, Civil, Mechanical) etc.
Group D: This group consists of Track-Man, Helper, Assistant Points Man, Safaiwala/Safaivali, Gunman, Peon and various posts in different cells and boards of Railway Department.
