Army action or attack?

Operation Blue Star was a military invasion rather than a military operation. The Indian Army had deployed around 6 lakh soldiers armed with tanks, guns and ammunition in Amritsar and nearby areas. On June 3, thousands of devotees gathered in the Harimandar complex on the martyrdom day of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji.

Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, the head of Damdami Taksal within Darbar Sahib complex, General Subeg Singh who was court-martialled and the supporters of Sikh Student Federation had formed a march. The army constantly warned them to come out. Asked to drop their weapons, but when there was no response, on June 1, the Central Reserve Police Force posted outside the Darbar Sahib complex opened fire.

Firing at the Darbar Sahib complex From June 2 to June 4, there was light firing from outside the Darbar Sahib complex. The Indira Gandhi government dismissed Darbara Singh’s Congress government and imposed President’s rule in Punjab. A curfew was imposed in the city. Even till June 5, Sant Jarnail Singh and his companions did not lay down their weapons in front of the army, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi ordered the army to enter the Darbar Sahib complex and conduct Operation Blue Star.

There was terrible bloodshed in the complex, as the Sangat who had come to celebrate the Martyrdom Day was inside. Massacre inside the Darbar Sahib complex June 6, 1984- Indian Army entered the Darbar Sahib complex. The army surrounded Sri Harminder Sahib from all sides.

Hundreds of people died in heavy firing and conflict. Many people including Bhindranwale and Lieutenant General Subeg Singh died in this attack on the Darbar Sahib complex. It was called Operation Blue Star. Government of India White Paper According to the Government of India White Paper, Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale was killed along with his colleagues in Operation Blue Star. A total of 493 civilians including civilians were killed. 86 were injured and 1592 were arrested. 83 soldiers were killed and 249 were injured, but there is still a dispute over these figures.

According to Sikh organizations, thousands of pilgrims were present in the Darbar Sahib complex and the number of innocent people who died is also in thousands. The Sikhs also disappeared during the attack. The army damaged the Sikh reference library in the Darbar Sahib complex. According to the SGPC, the army seized 512 manuscripts, 12613 rare handwritten books, manuscripts and scrolls of Gurbani. The committee is fighting a legal battle to get the books back. Meanwhile, 75 books and 3 registers have also been returned to the committee. The rest of the books are still unknown.

During the attack, the building of Sri Darbar Sahib and Sri Akal Takht Sahib suffered great damage. The atmosphere after the military attack Many Sikhs who were in prominent positions and services either resigned from their positions or returned the honors given by the government. Bhagat Puran Singh, the founder of Pingalwara, also returned the Padma Shri by writing a letter in protest.

Mutiny of Sikh soldiers June 7-10, 1984- There are reports of mutiny by Sikh soldiers in many parts of the country. About 500 soldiers of the Sikh regiment mutinied after hearing the news of Operation Blue Star in Ganganagar, Rajasthan. Sikh soldiers revolted in Bihar’s Ramgarh (now Jharkhand), Alwar, Jammu, Thane and Pune.

In Ramgarh, rebel soldiers killed their commander, Brigadier SC Puri. Assassination of Indira Gandhi Four months after Operation Blue Star, on October 31, 1984, Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, two Sikh bodyguards of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, shot and killed her. Immediately after the assassination of Indira Gandhi, Sikhs were massacred in many parts of the country, including Delhi, in which thousands of people lost their lives.

Britain’s role in Operation Blue Star

Britain’s role in Operation Blue Star In 2014, almost 30 years after the attack, it was revealed that the then British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher helped India in the military operation in Operation Blue Star in 1984. However, the then Lt. Gen. KS Brar, who led the army in Operation Blue Star, has denied any British role.

According to the famous British newspaper ‘Guardian’, the then British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher sent a personal note to Indira Gandhi on June 20, 1984 after the completion of Operation Blue Star in Amritsar. The note said Britain fully supports India’s integrity. In 2014, British Prime Minister David Cameron denied Britain’s role in Operation Blue Star.

UK Freelancer journalist Phil Miller has appealed to a British tribunal to make the documents public. The revelations after 30 years have been heating up British politics. During the parliamentary elections, political parties also used this issue to get Sikh votes in London by promising to make the documents public. Tanmanjit Singh Dhesi, the UK’s first turbaned Sikh MP, and Parit Kaur Gill, the first woman Sikh MP, have repeatedly raised the issue of making public documents of the UK connection to the 1984 attacks in Parliament.

Even after 39 years, the Sikh community celebrates the anniversary of the military attack on Darbar Sahib every year as Ghallughara Divas. The Sikh community considers this event as an unforgettable event. Every year on June 6, a big event is organized at Sri Akal Takht Sahib. Sikh organizations from all over the world participate in the event.
