Case of Balwant Singh: The Shiromani Akali Dal condemned the central government’s U-turn on the release of Bandi Singh Balwant Singh Rajoana in the Supreme Court and asserted that the BJP is adopting double standards in this matter.

The Akali Dal also asserted that it seems that there has been a Gupta agreement between the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on this issue, which is becoming a hindrance in the release of the captive Singhs.

Reacting to the Supreme Court’s decision to reject the mercy appeal filed by Rajoana and the central government’s proposal to commute his death sentence to life imprisonment, a senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former minister issued a statement here. Bikram Singh Majithia said that the central government has hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community.

He said that first in 2019, on the 550th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, in the presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the central government commuted Bhai Rajoana’s death sentence to life imprisonment and then the SGPC granted mercy to Rajoana in March 2012. changed his stand on the appeal of Bikram Majithia said that this has deeply hurt the hearts of Nanak Naam Lewa Sangat living all over the world.

Majithia asked the BJP to clarify its stand on the matter and said that former Punjab BJP in-charge Gajendra Singh Shekhawat had even signed the form for Rajoana’s release while bowing down at Takht Sri Damdama Sahib. He said that now the same party in the Supreme Court has become an obstacle in the way of the release of these captive Singhs, which is an insult to the Holy Throne.

Bikram Majithia said that the Sikh community feels that it is being discriminated against because it is a minority but Bilquis Bano’s rapists have been released but the way the central government has released Rajoana’s release in its affidavit is a national issue. Coupled with security, the hearts of Sikhs have been further affected by it.

He further said that Sikhs have made the most sacrifices for the freedom of the country and even now Sikhs have made the biggest contribution in protecting the borders of the country. He said that the Sikh community feels that the release of Rajoana will be a source of mutual agreement and the central government should respect it instead of opposing the release of Rajoana.

Bikram Majithia said that the Sikh community feels that the central government should stick to its sacred promise made in 2019 when it announced that the death sentence of Bhai Rajoana would be commuted to life imprisonment and 8 other Bandi Singhs who had who has served twice his life sentence, will be released. He said that this promise is not being fulfilled to the unfortunates and the human rights of all the Bandi Singhs including Bhai Rajoana are being violated.

Meanwhile, talking about the secret agreement between BJP and AAP on the issue of Bandi Singhs, Majithia said that the AAP government in Delhi has adopted the same stand as the BJP is adopting and Kejriwal government Prof. Davinderpal Singh Bhullar is not being released, although the matter has reached the Punishment Review Board several times.
