The Punjab government has decided to build a new canal from Harike to meet the shortage of canal water in four districts of South Malwa, Fazilka, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Bathinda and Faridkot. In this regard, an agreement was reached during the meeting between Punjab Water Resources Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hare and Rajasthan Water Resources Minister Mahendrajit Singh Malviya on Friday.

Gurmeet Singh Meet Hare said that a new canal should be built for Punjab along with the Rajasthan feeder canal. He said that during the meeting, the Punjab government proposed to Rajasthan that along with the Rajasthan Feeder Canal, a new canal should be built at the places of Rajasthan for the four districts of Fazilka, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Bathinda and Faridkot in South Malwa of Punjab. With this, these areas of Punjab can get the required canal water. Agreeing to this demand of Punjab, Rajasthan gave in-principle approval and asked that a written proposal should be sent by the Punjab government in this regard.
