A major accident was averted at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on August 23, 2023, when two Vistara flights came within 2 km of each other, that too on the same runway. Together, the two planes were carrying more than 300 passengers, and it could have been disastrous if not for the vigilance of the pilot of one of Vistara’s flights.

According to an ANI report, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has de-rostered an air traffic controller for inadvertently allowing two different aircraft to cross and take off on the same runway at the same time.

According to media and wire reports, the ATC at the Delhi airport cleared one Vistara flight for take-off while another was in the process of landing, putting the two flights on a potential collision course. The incident involved Vistara flight UK725 from Delhi to Bagdogra on Wednesday morning, which was taking off from the recently inaugurated fourth runway of the Delhi airport.

On the other hand, Vistara flight VT1926 from Ahmedabad to Delhi was completing its landing on a parallel runway 29L and was directed by the air traffic controller to cross runway 29R, proceeding towards the end of the runway. “Momentarily, the tower controller forgot this crossing and issued take-off clearance to another Vistara flight VTI725 (Delhi-Bagdogra) from runway 29R.”

“On realizing the error based on the input from VTI926, the tower controller told VTI725 to abort the take off,” the official said. The take-off was immediately canceled following Air Traffic Control (ATC) instructions. “The tower controller immediately instructed the Delhi-Bagdogra flight to cancel its take-off, following which immediate corrective action was taken,” an official said.
