The Indian hockey team has made history by reaching the semi-finals for the first time since 1972. In the quarter finals, India defeated Great Britain 3-1. For Team India, Dilpreet Singh scored in the 7th minute, Gurjant Singh in the 16th minute and Hardik Singh in the 57th minute. Team India will now face Belgium in the semifinals on August 3. The second semi-final will be played on the same day between Australia and Germany.

Hockey was played in the semifinal format at the 1972 Olympics. After this in 1976 Team India could not reach the knockout. India won a gold medal in 1980, but there was no semi-final format in that Olympics. The two teams with the most points after the group stage played directly in the final.

For the first time since 1972, Team India has won 4 or more matches in the pool stage. In the 1972 Olympics, India won 5 out of 7 matches in the pool stage. India has won the most number of medals in men’s hockey at the Olympics. The team won gold medals at the 1928, 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1964 and 1980 Olympics. He also won a silver medal in 1960 and a bronze medal in 1968 and 1972. India has not won a medal in hockey since the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
