In view of the flood-like situation in various parts of the state, the Health and Family Welfare Department of Punjab has issued a health advisory today to protect people from water-borne or vector-borne diseases. Due to accumulation of water, the possibility of spreading such diseases increases.
Giving information in this regard, Director Health and Family Welfare Dr. Adarshpal Kaur said that the health department is always trying to keep people safe and healthy during such natural calamities and the department is providing 24-hour health services in the affected areas. Urging people to follow the advisory completely, he said that only safe water should be used for drinking and preferably boiled water should be used. Frequent hand washing with soap is essential to avoid infection.
The advisory states that food items soaked in flood water should not be consumed. If anyone develops fever or diarrhoea, they should be shown to government health facilities including medical camps and should not self-medicate. If there are more cases of an infectious disease in an area, the nearest health facility should be notified immediately.
It further states that bacterial skin infections are commonly caused by contaminated water and insect bites during floods and people are advised to wear rubber boots and full-sleeved clothing to prevent such infections. . For any kind of treatment one should go to the nearest health care facility.
It should be said that the health department has also advised not to enter the flood water because snake bites are also common during floods. If you need to enter the water, wear tall boots. In case of snake bite, take the patient to the nearest health center as soon as possible. Dr. Adarsh Pal directed the authorities concerned to spray larvicide to prevent the spread of vector-borne diseases. He further said that all the operations are being monitored at all times by the team of the state headquarters.
