The education department has issued show-cause notices to the district education officers and school heads due to the low enrollment in the state. District school heads with low admissions have now been instructed to fill and send complete information regarding admissions in the issued proforma.

According to the information received, the Office of the Secretary, School Education will reconcile the increased enrollment at the state level after the data received again at the district level of Punjab. Under Section 10, the school principals who were issued notices due to low admissions will send the details of the admissions recorded in the proforma within a week.

It is to be mentioned that in 15 districts in Punjab, admissions in pre-primary and primary classes had decreased, while in 12 districts, admissions in secondary classes had decreased significantly compared to previous years. The result was that the target of 10 percent more admissions in the state could not be met, due to which the target of more admissions in primary classes could not be met in 15 districts including Barnala, Moga, Faridkot, Patiala Gurdaspur, Sangrur and Fazlika.

Similarly, in 12 districts including Jalandhar, SBS Nagar, Pathankot, enrollment in secondary classes was less than the target. The heads of these districts were sent a notice by the Secretary School Education Office under Section 5 and 10 of the Punjab Civil Services Rules, 1970 and asked the reason for this. The thing to be seen is that the notice regarding the decrease in admissions is the district of Mohali, the most hi-tech city. The education officer also happened to the elementary school.

According to information, there are about 12,880 primary, 2,670 middle, 1,740 high and 1,972 senior secondary schools in Punjab. In the academic session 2022-23, about 27 lakh 95 thousand were admitted in all classes. The education department had set a target of 10 percent increase in enrollment from the previous academic year. Since admissions for the current academic session began on April 1, government schools have enrolled 29.22 lakh students, up from 27.95 lakh in 2022-23.
