Supreme Court notice to Center regarding ban on BBC documentary

A hearing was held in the Supreme Court on Friday regarding the ban on the banned BBC documentary ‘India: The Modi Challenge’. The court has sent a notice to the central government and ordered it to produce the original documents in this case. The Supreme Court has sought a reply from the Center within three weeks in this matter. The next hearing of this case will be held in April.

In fact, a petition against the ban on the documentary was filed by Mahua Moitra, Prashant Bhushan and advocate ML Sharma. The petition states that the government’s decision to ban the BBC documentary is arbitrary and unconstitutional.

Demand to lift the ban

In the petition filed in the Supreme Court, the petitioners said that the government is afraid of the truth shown in the BBC documentary. In the petition, it was said that this ban is dangerous and arbitrary as well as unconstitutional. One petition argued that the Supreme Court has clearly stated that criticism of the government or its policies or even the judgment of the Supreme Court does not amount to a violation of sovereignty.

Screening conducted at universities

Despite the ban on the BBC documentary, some student unions have screened it on various university campuses across the country. After this, violence was seen in many places and electricity was also cut off in Delhi’s Ambedkar University to stop its screening.

A petition was also filed regarding the complete ban

The Supreme Court, on the other hand, asked to mention again on Friday for immediate listing of a petition seeking a complete ban on the BBC documentary in India. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud asked the counsel appearing for the petitioner to mention the matter on Friday. The Supreme Court was hearing a petition filed by Hindu Sena president Vishnu Gupta and farmer Birendra Kumar Singh, in which an investigation has also been conducted. Demands have been made against the BBC and its employees. The petition states that the BBC documentary has hatched a deep conspiracy against India and the global rise of Prime Minister Modi.
