washingtonIndia’s private sector airline Air India will buy 220 aircraft from Boeing in a $34 billion deal. There will also be an option to buy 70 more aircraft. With this, the total value of the deal could go up to $45.9 billion. US President Joe Biden has described the deal as a ‘historic agreement’.

Announcing the Boeing-Air India deal on Tuesday, Biden said that together with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he is looking forward to further strengthening the relationship between India and America. According to a White House announcement, Boeing and Air India have reached an agreement under which the airline will buy a total of 220 aircraft. These include 190 B737 Max, 20 B787 and 10 B777X aircraft. The deal is worth $34 billion.

The deal includes an option to purchase an additional 50 Boeing 737 Max and 20 Boeing 787 aircraft. In this way, the total deal of 290 aircraft will sit at $ 45.9 billion. Biden said, “I am proud to announce today a historic agreement between Air India and Boeing to deliver more than 200 US-made aircraft.” The Air India order is Boeing’s third largest ever in dollar value and second largest in terms of number of aircraft.

Biden said the purchase would create one million jobs for Americans in 44 states. Many of these jobs will not require a college degree. He said the announcement shows the strength of the US-India economic partnership. He said, “With Prime Minister Modi, I look forward to further strengthening the partnership between the two countries. We will continue to address shared global challenges to create a more prosperous future for our citizens.”

The announcement of the deal comes after the US-India Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (ICET) launched last month. The initiative aims to expand strategic technology partnership and defense industrial cooperation between the governments, businesses and universities of the two countries. Biden and Modi had announced ICET in May 2022.
