There was a lot of ruckus in Karnataka on Monday. Members of the Banjara community here on Monday targeted the house of BJP strongman BS Yeddyurappa in Shikaripura town of the district and pelted stones in protest against the internal reservation announced by the state government for Scheduled Castes, injuring some policemen. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) have been imposed in the town. Reacting to the incidents, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai blamed the Congress behind the violence.
On stone pelting at his house and office, BJP leader BS Yeddyurappa said that he will call the leaders of the Banjara community and talk to them. I am working for the development of Shikaripura since last 50 years, protestors may have some misunderstanding so I have asked SP and DC not to take any strict action.
Police lathicharged
Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai spoke to the media in this regard and said that local Congress leaders are instigating people. The Congress is unable to digest the social justice done to every community and has resorted to inciting violence. Banjara community should not come under the influence of rumours. To disperse the protestors who had gathered in large numbers, the police lathi-charged, in which some members of the Banjara community were injured.
Protesters reached Yeddyurappa’s house
The protesters gathered near Yeddyurappa’s house and started pelting stones, breaking some window panes. Seeing the situation getting out of control, additional forces were called in the area. The protesters alleged that the Scheduled Castes belonging to the Banjara community have been given “less” reservation. The Karnataka cabinet had last week decided to introduce internal reservation among Scheduled Castes.
The state government wrote a letter to the Center
The state government had also written a letter to the Center recommending that the proposal be included in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution. Appealing to the leaders of the Banjara community to exercise restraint, Bommai clarified that the government has implemented the recommendations of the cabinet sub-committee and not the recommendations of the Sadashiv Commission. Criticizing the Congress, the Chief Minister said that it is condemnable to create unrest in the society for political gains.
