Revenue growth is the result of elimination of mafia and corruption: Harpal Cheema

Harpal Singh Cheema: “For the first time in Punjab, people have elected a third party Chief Minister and that too with a historic majority. And now the AAP government and our Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann are living up to the expectations of the people who elected them with great hope,” said Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema.

Addressing a press conference in Jalandhar, AAP’s senior leader and Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said that our supremo Arvind Kejriwal and our party’s only aim is honest politics. Our party was born out of the anti-corruption movement and after forming the government in Delhi and Punjab, we have proved by our work that politics of integrity is not only possible but very successful. Cheema said that due to the honest AAP government in Punjab, the overall revenue of the state has increased substantially.

Presenting the numbers, Cheema said that Punjab’s SGST collection in April 2022 was Rs 1532 crore and in April 2023 it was Rs 2015 crore, i.e. an increase of 31.53 percent. Excise revenue was ₹781.64 crore in April 2023 as against ₹564.12 crore in April 2022, a growth of 38.34%. Due to the new excise policy of the ‘AAP’ government, an annual increase of 41.41% has been recorded in the excise revenue of the state. From stamps and registration, the state government collected ₹441 crore, an increase of 24% from the April 2022 collection of ₹355 crore. Similarly, a 4 percent increase in revenue was recorded in April this year from tax on vehicles. When we compare the total revenue of April 2022 and April 2023, the total tax revenue of the state has increased by 22%.

Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said that for the first time the revenue of Punjab has crossed Rs 4,000 crore in a month which is a big achievement and this is possible only because of an honest government. He said that mafia and corruption are no longer prevalent in Punjab, due to which the revenue is increasing. People have faith in Aam Aadmi Party government and they are supporting us in this.

He said that the people of Punjab deserve the most praise and thanks for all this because they have elected an honest government. He also thanked Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal for this achievement.

The finance minister said that when the GST system was introduced in India in July 2015, the state governments were also directed to raise revenue at their own level. But the misfortune of Punjab was that the state had a corrupt Congress government which did nothing to increase revenue in five years and lived only on GST compensation money for five years.

Cheema said that our government presented two budgets and did not impose any new taxes, yet the appreciable increase in revenue means that everything is possible with the cooperation of honest government and people.
