Punjab government will start a special campaign to eradicate anemia: Dr. Baljit Kaur

Malnutrition and Anemia: The Punjab government is going to observe a special awareness month from July 12 to August 12, 2023 for eradication of malnutrition and anemia in the state under Poshan Abhiyan. Giving information in this regard, Social Security Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur said that already Anemia Day is celebrated every Wednesday at Anganwadi Centers to fight anemia. It creates awareness about the adverse effects of anemia among women, adolescent girls, lactating mothers and pregnant women. A special campaign is being conducted across the state from July 12 to August 12, 2023 to eradicate anemia.

The cabinet minister said that the campaign will focus on promoting healthy eating habits, providing nutritional supplements in collaboration with the health department and strengthening the capacity of the health system to provide quality services.

Dr. Baljit Kaur said that the Department of Social Security, Women and Child Development in collaboration with the Department of Health and Family Welfare and the National Child Health Program (RBSK) regularly conducts awareness campaigns to educate people about the prevention and treatment of anemia. The minister said that during the campaign, the department will organize health camps, rallies and other events at Anganwadi Centers and Mohalla Clinics to educate people about the symptoms, causes, consequences of anemia and the importance and goal of timely medical care. The campaign aims to reduce anemia by 2% in the current financial year.

Dr. Baljit Kaur explained that anemia is a condition caused by lack of red blood cells or hemoglobin in the blood, which causes weakness, fatigue and other health problems. It is a public health concern among children and women, as it affects their physical and cognitive development, leading to poor educational and economic outcomes.

Apart from this, Social Security Women and Child Development Director Madhavi Kataria has written to all the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and given a list of suggested activities to be done during the campaign. The Deputy Commissioner will ensure coordination of all stakeholders including parents, teachers, health workers, and social leaders for the eradication of anaemia.
