Chandigarh: Punjab government officials will not be exempted from the toll tax on the National Highway. The proposal sent by the government to the National Highway Authority of India has been rejected. NHAI has refused to entertain this proposal. The Punjab government had also passed this proposal in a special session recently.

The government in its order sent to NHAI on June 8 said that Executive Engineers, SDOs, JEs, Patwaris, District Dars, Deputy Collectors Water Resources who cross the toll barrier for their duties. They should be exempted from toll tax. The Principal Secretary has also written a letter to the Regional Office of the National Highway Authority of India in Panchkula, Haryana regarding water resources.

Sepal Secretary Water Resources wrote in his letter that the officials have to cross the toll plaza to perform their duties and they have to pay the toll tax. This puts a burden on the government’s exchequer. In his letter, he wrote to the NHAI that all the officials and employees whose categories have been notified should be exempted from toll tax.

NHAI Regional Officer Vipnesh Sharma has written to the Chief Secretary of the Water Resources Department and said that the categories of officers and employees of the Water Resources Department are not included in the list of persons, officials etc. mentioned in Clause 11 of the National Highway Feal Rule 2008 which Because NHAI cannot accept this proposal of Punjab Govt.

The Punjab government had sent this proposal to the NHAI on June 8, but the same proposal was also passed by the Punjab government in the recently convened special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, which was approved by the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, after which these officials were sent to Punjab. Government tolls will be discounted, but National Highway tolls will not have to be paid.
