Due to the entry of leopards into the cities of Punjab, the state government has come on alert mode. The government has prepared a mega plan to deal with this problem. Now the cheetahs will be identified from their numbers to their tracks. Punjab Wildlife will work on this project. Apart from this, a comprehensive plan on leopard management will be prepared.

Wildlife experts believe that the number of leopards in Punjab is not that high, but their sighting in two places in a short period of time and death in road accidents has drawn the attention of the government. It is considered a good initiative. According to forest department officials, there are several reasons for the entry of leopards into Punjab.

Firstly, development is also taking place in Himachal Pradesh, so the forests there are being destroyed. Because of this, leopards are wandering and coming to Punjab. Apart from this, when winter increases in the mountains, the leopard faces difficulties in getting food. Even in such a situation, leopards come from the mountains to the plains. However, the pattern has changed since some time. Leopards are now coming to Punjab even in summer.

In such a situation it is necessary to study the corridors and routes followed by the leopards. Leopards are likely to exist in the hilly areas of Punjab. These include the Shiwalik region including Sri Anandpur Sahib, Ropar, Nangal, Hoshiarpur and Pathankot bordering Himachal. Leopards were spotted in residential areas in Ropar and Ludhiana in December.
