Chandigarh: Chief Minister Punjab Bhagwant Singh Mann has clarified that there is no surplus water in the canals of Punjab. Therefore, the question of giving more canal water to another state does not arise.
Mann was speaking to reporters in Chandigarh today after flagging off hi-tech vehicles given to the Punjab Police.
In response to a question asked, he gave information that 18000 cusecs of Punjab’s water goes to Rajasthan through the Indira Gandhi Canal going to Rajasthan, but now that the Rajasthan government has closed the canal for repairs, now the Sirhind feeder is passing by it. (5200 cusecs of water) is being demanded, which Punjab is unable to provide at all as water reaches the Malwa belt through this canal.
It is to be noted that the news of Rajasthan seeking water from the canals of Punjab is in much discussion. Twitter account Tractor to Twitter, which has been a constant voice for Zira Morche, claimed that the Punjab government has prepared to give the remaining waters of Punjab to Rajasthan. To substantiate this claim, they also shared pictures of Rajasthan newspapers, in which it was claimed that the Punjab government is ready to give more water to Rajasthan.
Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira also retweeted this tweet and sought clarification from the Punjab government in this regard. They have questioned that the news of agreeing to give more water to Rajasthan has been published in the newspapers there, is it true? A few days ago, such news came to light after an MP from Rajasthan met the Chief Minister of Punjab in Bathinda.
