Powercom's JE sacked, accused of Rs 4.21 crore scam

An Assistant Junior Engineer (JE) of Punjab PowerCom has been sacked just two days before his retirement. Assistant JE accused of Rs 4.21 crore scam. Besides dismissing the accused JE with immediate effect, the management has also issued orders to recover the entire amount of the scam from the accused.

Accused Assistant JE Gurdeep Singh was posted in Bhador Branch of PowerCom Distribution Sub Division in Barnala Constituency. According to the order of dismissal of the employee issued by Powercom, based on the complaint, an investigation was conducted by the Assistant JE regarding the commissioning of illegal tubewell connections, in which it was found that Gurdeep Singh had been operating from the store outlet in Barnala from the year 2012-2013 till now. Unauthorized connections were made by misusing withdrawn transformers and other equipment.

About 5.37 crores were not submitted to the accounting office. The investigation found that the Assistant JEs in other sub-divisions including Bhadod had commissioned illegal agricultural tubewell connections by misusing the goods taken from the store. Powercom suffered a loss of Rs 37.22 lakh in this.

Apart from this, the accused did not return to the store 268 transformers removed from the sites of 370 transformers withdrawn from the store from the year 2012-2013 till now. A large quantity of goods were taken from the store and collected in an open space in front of his residence, which remained unused.
