The number of Ukrainians in Germany who are officially employed has reached 65,000 since February last year, according to a board member of the Federal Employment Agency, Daniel Terzenbac.

At the same time, the number of Ukrainians engaged in mini-jobs, where the salary is over 450 euros per month, permitting them to receive social benefits is 21,000, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine led the latter’s citizens to seek asylum in other European countries, with Germany currently recording 1.1 million refugees from Ukraine last year, according to the Federal Statistical Office data.

Net Migration from Ukraine reached 962,000 last year, higher than that registered from Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq, while all together reaching 834,000 for a period from 2014 until 2016.

While the influx of refugees from Ukraine has caused a crisis that is considered even greater than the one registered in 2015 and 2016, it helped Germany to fill in the labour shortage gaps recorded in many sectors.

Terzenbac said that he believes that in the coming months, the number of Ukrainian workers will surge after a large number of them will complete integration as well as professional language courses. He added that many Ukrainians intend to remain in this country for a long time and learn the German language.

“We see a very high level of motivation, to the point that they overpay taxes,” a representative of the board of the Federal Employment Agency said in an interview with DPA.

He stressed that the number of men of working age from Ukraine also marked an increase.

The Federal Office for Migration said that it received 31,362 asylum applications in the first month of this year, stressing that the number of asylum applications’ number continues to remain high. Of the total number, 29,072 were first-time asylum applications and 2,290 subsequent requests.

On the other hand, more than 100,000 asylum seekers attempted to reach Germany last year without even being registered by authorities at the European Union border officials before reaching the country, Hot News report noted.

According to the United Nations figures, nearly 4.8 million refugees from Ukraine remain in European countries, with Poland (1.5 million), Germany (900,000), and Czechia (500,000) welcoming the largest number of them.

A survey provided by the EWL Migration Platform and the Center for East European Studies of the University of Warsaw called “Ukrainian refugees – professional activation in Poland and Germany” showed that of 800 Ukrainians who participated in the study, only every fourth respondent wants to return to Ukraine.
