Malta Registered Nearly 2.3 Million Tourists Last Year

Visitor numbers to Malta reached 2.3 million last year making it 83 per cent of the pre-pandemic total and their busiest ever.

In terms of volumes, in 2022 the Polish, Austrian, Italian and French markets also exceeded 2019 levels, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

According to Breaking Travel News, in the same period, total tourist expenses were estimated at โ‚ฌ2.0 billion. On the other hand, total expenditure per capita decreased to โ‚ฌ880 from โ‚ฌ899 in 2021.

โ€œSustainability is a necessity not an option. We need to understand this principle more than ever. This means that we have tourists that visit our country over a whole year which directly leaves a positive environmental impact especially with the reduction in emissions in the touristic activity,โ€ tourism minister Clayton Bartolo pointed out in this regard.

In addition, the Maltese authorities estimated that the total number of incoming tourists for December 2022 was 136,423, while the total nights spent reached 967,108.

During last December also a total of 117,668 tourists visited Malta for leisure purposes, and 12,966 tourists came for business purposes.

A percentage of 41.2 per cent of incoming tourists were aged 25-44, followed by the 45-64 age group or 33.6 per cent. The largest group of incoming tourists consisted of residents of the United Kingdom, Italians and French with a total of 43.9 per cent.

Compared to December 2021, in the same period last year, the total number of nights spent increased by 24.8 per cent, exceeding 0.9 million nights. Meanwhile, the majority of guest nights or 83.3 per cent of them spent the nights in rental accommodation facilities. As a result, in total, the average length of stay of incoming tourists was 7.1 nights.

December 2022 saw a significant increase in total tourist expenses, which exceeded โ‚ฌ101.5 million, which means an increase of 85 per cent compared to the same month of 2021. At the same time, the average expenses per night were estimated at โ‚ฌ105.

According to the data of the National Statistics Office of Malta, a total of 174,460 tourists visited Malta in November 2022while the total nights spent reached 1,203,802.

Such data also show that last November, 144,631 inbound tourists visited Malta for leisure purposes, and another 23,615 tourists came for business purposes.

In the total number of tourists arriving during November 2022, Italian, French and United Kingdom citizens have had an increase of 42.4 per cent. During this corresponding month, the total number of nights spent increased by 36.3 per cent compared to the same period in 2021, exceeding 1.2 million nights.
