Even in November 2022, the government had ordered the kiln owners to use 20 percent straw, but due to non-availability of kiln-making units, the kiln owners sought concession on this basis. Then a concession was made.
9 units making pallets
Now there are nine straw-to-straw units in Punjab and six are under construction. Because of this now Punjab Pollution Control Board (Punjab Pollution Control Board) has made it clear to all the kiln owners that no concession will be given this time. Science and Technology Department Secretary Rahul Tiwari said that the six units under construction will also start functioning by October.
70 to 80 lakh rupees are spent on 1 unit
It will essentially make almost as many pallets for brick kilns. It is worth noting that the cost of a straw pressing unit is Rs 70 to 80 lakh. A subsidy of Rs 28 lakh is given by the central government to set up the unit. Department officials say that if the kiln owner wants, 4-5 people can install such a unit together so that they do not have to depend on other units and their cost will also be reduced.
Straw causes pollution
190 lakh tonnes of stubble is produced in the state every year during the paddy season, of which only 20 per cent is being disposed of. Farmers burn the rest of the stubble, which becomes a major source of pollution. Efforts have been made over the last few years to reduce the incidence of stubble burning but it has not been reduced to a large extent.
