The Election Commission of Pakistan has started accepting nomination papers of potential candidates on Wednesday. Along with this, the process of general elections to be held on February 8 has started. Initiating the process of receiving nomination papers from prospective candidates, the Election Commission of Pakistan said that they can collect the forms from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm and submit their nomination papers till December 22.

The Election Commission will release the preliminary list of candidates on December 23, while the scrutiny of nomination papers will take place from December 24 to 30. After the new delimitation, the lower house of parliament, the National Assembly, will have 336 seats, including 266 general seats, 60 seats reserved for women and 10 seats reserved for non-Muslims.

Imran Khan can fight on all the three seats

The jailed former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan will contest from at least three constituencies in the upcoming general elections. His party has announced this on Wednesday. On August 5, a lower court in Islamabad found Imran Khan guilty in the Toshakhana corruption case filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan.

Disqualified from contesting elections

This decision meant that he was disqualified from contesting elections for five years. A few days later, the Islamabad High Court suspended Imran Khan's three-year sentence, but he is still in jail in other cases. Lawyer Ali Zafar told the media outside Adiala Jail that Imran Khan wants to state that he will contest from at least three constituencies in Pakistan.

Immediate decision on Imran Khan's petition

According to a report in the Pakistani Dawn newspaper, Zafar said that the Islamabad High Court may soon pronounce its verdict on Imran Khan's petition challenging his conviction in the Toshakhana case. He said that we hope that the verdict will be announced soon as the election schedule has been released.
